Speed to lead: why the first answer wins the job
Respond while a new lead is still looking, with a useful first message and a clear next step.
When someone requests service, they are often contacting more than one business. A prompt, useful answer makes it easier for them to continue with you while the job is still urgent.
Tradesly can start that conversation for eligible leads after texting is configured. The goal is not simply to be first; it is to give the person a recognizable business name, a relevant response, and one easy next step.
1 What the customer should experience
The first message should sound like your business and relate to the request the person just made. It should avoid private history, unnecessary detail, and promises your team has not approved.
A good opener normally does three things:
- identifies your business;
- acknowledges the service request in plain language; and
- asks one question or offers one next step.
When the person replies, the conversation can continue in the same thread. Your team can open that thread, read what has already been said, and step in when a person is the better answer. The first text and The reply thread cover those two moments.
2 Fast still needs permission and judgment
A connected source, form submission, or phone field does not automatically establish permission for every text your business might send. Confirm that each source presents the required disclosure and records the permission your business relies on. Carrier registration supports message delivery for eligible numbers; it does not replace recipient consent or guarantee delivery.
Response timing can also depend on your configuration, the information available for the recipient, carrier status, and applicable quiet-hour rules. Avoid promising that every lead will receive a message within a fixed number of seconds or at every hour.
3 What to do next
Review your texting setup.
Open SMS Registration in Settings and follow Turn on texting for your business. Confirm that the source you plan to test has an appropriate SMS disclosure and consent record.
Use View page with your own mobile number.
Submit a realistic request through the same page a customer would use. Do not test with another person’s number unless they agreed to receive the messages.
Read the first message as the customer.
It should identify the business, reflect the request without exposing unrelated history, and end with a clear question.
Reply and review the thread.
Ask a realistic follow-up, then open the conversation in Tradesly. Confirm that your team can understand what happened and see the next action.
Coach one correction at a time.
If the tone, question, or offer is wrong, describe the desired customer-facing change and repeat the test before connecting a new lead source.
4 What to monitor after launch
Review a sample of new conversations rather than judging the feature only by response time. Check whether customers understand who texted them, whether the opener gives them something useful to answer, and whether conversations that need a person are visible to your team.
If one source behaves differently from another, pause that source and contact support with its name and a lead identifier. Do not send screenshots containing unrelated customer information.
